Back to the future!
Do you know what this is?
STRING!
String is a symbol of the older methods that were used in printing many years ago. It was used to tie and hold together the engravings and hand-set type. They then could be set and locked firmly into a chase (bottom right picture) to be printed. After the forms were in place, the string was removed and tied neatly into loop like the one shown at the right, so that it may be reused. Our old-timers remember that there was string everywhere in the old shops and each typesetter or press person knew how to tie the string exactly as this one is tied.
