Representative Gene Wu, along with experts and activists, has warned about the recently passed legislation to redraw Texas’ congressional maps. They argue this change would endanger minority political representation. In response, California and other Democrativ-led states are preparing to fight “fire with fire”, according to Rep. Wu.
American Community Media hosted a key conversatiton analyzing the posible consequences the new electoral map would have on Black, Latino, Asian, and other minority group in the so-called “redistriting war”.
“What they’re trying to do is rewrite the rules in the middle of the game”
Democrats argue that adopting the new maps will tilt the 2026 midterm election in favor of President Trump. Texas State Representative Gene Wu stated that “what they’re trying to do is rewrite the rules in the middle of the game because they know they’re going to lose. Everything that’s happening is so incredibly unpopular, not just what President Trump is doing, but also what Republicans are doing in Congress.”. Wu also noted that redistriting is required to be done only after a census.
According to the Representative, securing five extra seats it would require heavily racially gerrymandering an already gerrymandered map. “What it will mean is that our communities will have even less voice”, explained Wu reffering to Latino, Black and Asian communities. “Our people will die because if we can’t ask for services, we can’t ask for support. Money doesn’t come, people die”, he concluded.
How does it impact minorities?
“Redistricting i show we determine who gets elected for positions, and that is important because who we elect is our voice on important issues like flood relief or funding”, explained Karla Maradiaga, a Staff Attorney in the Voting Rights Program.
Maradiaga echoed the concers of many residents, focusing on the motivation for the redistricting and the lack of transparency in the process: “There was seemingly no reason other than a letter from the Trump administration asking Governor Abbott to do this”. Melissa Allala, resident of the Congressional District 29 and longtime activists, reported that “at the hearings nobody had seen the maps”.
Carmela Walker, from the Center for Social Justice & Education Houston Area Urban League, emphasized the gravity of the situation by predicting that “minority communities are going to have their voices muted”.
“We have a duty to ensure that we make the choices, because we’re tax-paying people.”, Walker stated. She explained that this could affect everything from school funding to the very capacity to vote. “It’s beyond just Black people.”, she noted.
Fight fire with fire
Rep. Wu stated that he is looking forward to engaging with Democratic-led states to build what he calls a “defensive wall”. His strategy involves promoting trigger bills that would redraw the congressional maps in as many blue states as posible.
“If they do fire, if Governor Abbott decides he wants to be Trump’s lapdog, just know that it’ll for no effect”, said Wu. The idea is that, when Texas approves those five adittional seats, states like California would immediately respond by adding five seats of their own.
“What we need to go next is New York. We need to go back to Illinois. We need to go to New Hampshire. We need to go to all the blue states. Everybody needs to put in a trigger law. That is the way we save this country”, Wu asserted.
In the meantime, Karla Maradiaga is urging communities to speak out agains the redrawing. She also emphasizes the importance of voting, even if it feels hopeless: “I do want to remind people that, not all races depend on maps. So still going out and voting is very important”.

El representante estatal de Texas, Gene Wu, declaró que “lo que están intentando hacer es alterar las reglas en medio del juego porque saben que van a perder. Todo lo que está sucediendo en muy impopular; no solamente lo que hace Trump, sino también lo que los republicanos están haciendo en el Congreso”. Wu también aclaró que la redistritación es un proceso que, por ley, debe realizarse después de un censo.
Según el legislador, para asegurar cinco escaños adicionales sería necesario aplicar un gerrymandering racial masivo en un mapa que ya de por sí esta manipulado. “Esto significaría que nuestras comunidades tendrán aún menos voz”, explicó Wu, refiriéndose a las comunidades latina, negra y asiática. “Nuestra gente morirá si no podemos exigir servicios ni pedir ayuda. Si no llega el dinero, la gente muere”, sentenció.
¿Cómo impacta esto a las minorías?
“La redistribución determina quién sale electo para los cargos, y eso es crucial porque quienes elegimos son nuestra voz en temas importantes como ayuda por inundaciones o financiamiento”, explicó Karla Maradiaga, abogada del programa Voting Rights.
Maradiaga hizo eco de la preocupación ciudadana, cuestionando la motivación detrás del cambio y la opacidad del proceso: “Al parecer, la única razón fue una carta de la administración de Trump pidiéndole al gobernador Abbott que hiciera esto”. Melissa Allala, residente del Distrito Congressional 29 y activista de larga trayectoria, reportó que “en las audiencias, nadie había visto los mapas”.
Carmela Walker, del Centro para la Justicia Social y la Educación de la Liga Urbana de Houston, enfatizó la gravedad de la situación al predecir que “a las comunidades minoritarias se les va a silenciar la voz”.
“Tenemos el deber de asegurar que nosotros tomemos las decisiones, porque somos contribuyentes”, declaró Walker. Explicó que esto podría afectar desde el financiamiento de las escuelas hasta la propia capacidad de votar. “Esto va más allá de solo la comunidad negra”, puntualizó.
Combatir fuego con fuego
El representante Wu declaró que espera colaborar con estados demócratas para construir lo que denomina un “muro defensivo”. Su estrategia consiste en impulsar trigger bills que redefinirían el mapa electoral en la mayor cantidad posible de estados azules.
“Si ellos juegan con fuego, si el gobernador Abbott decide ser el perrito faldero de Trump, que sepa que no va a quedar sin respuesta”, afirmó Wu. La idea es que si Texas aprueba esas cinco curules adicionales, estados como California responderían de inmediato añadiendo cinco escaños propios.
“Nuestro próximo destino debe ser Nueva York. Tenemos que ir a Illinois. Tenemos que ir a New Hampshire. Tenemos que ir a cada estado azul y presionar para que aprueben leyes automáticas. Así es como salvamos a este país”, sostuvo Wu.
Mientras tanto, Karla Maradiago insta a las comunidades a alzar la voz contra estos cambios. También enfatiza en la importancia de votar, incluso si hay una sensación de desesperanza: ““Quiero recordarle a la gente que no todas las contiendas electorales dependen de estos mapas. Por eso, salir a votar sigue siendo tremendamente importante”.
