Miriam “Mimi” Vazquez builds community among Latina women with “Eventos con Amigas” in Sonoma
A growing number of Latina women in Sonoma County are creating events centered on community, friendship and connection, and Miriam “Mimi” Vazquez is one of the women helping lead the way. In future editions, La Voz hopes to highlight other local leaders willing to share their stories, including women like Alma Magallon of Latinas Emprendedoras. They have invited La Voz to their coastal hike in November in Bodega Bay. Stay tuned.
Have you heard about the popular “Eventos con Amigas” and “Market con Amigas”?
Miriam’s story began with a difficult experience that is more common than many people realize: postpartum depression and the isolation that can come with it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in eight women who recently gave birth report symptoms of postpartum depression, and a lack of social support can increase the risk. Research also shows that strong social connections can support emotional well-being and help people cope with stress.
For Miriam—a Mexican mother, entrepreneur, self-taught winemaker and proud Spanglish speaker—the need for connection became deeply personal. During that period of her life, she looked for places where she could feel supported and reconnect with herself, but she couldn’t quite find what she needed.
She wasn’t looking for another formal meeting or organization. She missed the warmth and togetherness she remembered from growing up in Mexico—the birthdays, weddings, baby showers and other gatherings where talking, laughing, eating and simply spending time together were a natural part of feeling connected. That experience gave her an idea: if she couldn’t find the kind of space she was looking for, maybe she could create it herself.
Creating a Place to Belong
Mimi began organizing gatherings with the warmth and energy of a Mexican fiesta. From lotería nights and paint-and-wine workshops to group exercise classes, her events became places where women could relax, meet new people and enjoy themselves. One of her most popular activities was something surprisingly simple: decorating hair clips.
Simple, yes—but also fun. And sometimes that is exactly the point.
Although the events are deeply influenced by Miriam’s Mexican culture, they are open to all women. Diversity is important to her, and women from every background are welcome. She also encourages mothers and daughters to attend together, an idea inspired in part by the close relationship she shares with her own mother.
At their heart, the events are about giving women a little time and space for themselves—a chance to make friends, build connections and perhaps meet someone they otherwise never would have crossed paths with. Getting there, however, wasn’t always easy.
At her first event, Miriam had to turn away about half of the women who had signed up because of space limitations she hadn’t been told about beforehand. Instead of giving up, the experience strengthened her commitment to getting the details right.
That meant good food rooted in tradition—birria, sopes, seafood and pozole—along with lively music and an atmosphere where every woman could feel seen, welcomed and included.
Does It Cost Money to Attend?
Miriam initially tried offering her events for free. Over time, she learned that charging an affordable admission fee not only helped cover expenses such as professional music, insurance and event spaces, but also encouraged people to follow through on their reservations. At the same time, she doesn’t want money to be the reason someone stays home. Miriam quietly provides tickets to women who cannot afford to attend, helping make sure financial circumstances don’t keep someone from being part of the experience.
Since the first Galentine’s gathering in 2024, Eventos con Amigas has grown into a monthly community gathering that continues to evolve. Activities have ranged from walking and dancing to wine education and arts and crafts. Like the women who attend, no two experiences are exactly alike.
From Community Gatherings to Small Business
Along the way, Miriam’s role has also changed. She is no longer simply organizing events; she has become a mentor to other women.
Through Market con Amigas, she helps small vendors navigate some of the less glamorous—but essential—parts of running a business, including permits and insurance. The market gives women an opportunity to put their products in front of customers while learning what it takes to turn an idea or passion into something sustainable.
In many ways, Miriam has become the kind of community leader she once went looking for herself.
When La Voz asked what she hopes other women will take away from these gatherings, her answer was simple:
“I want to inspire people to make time for themselves, try new things and support one another,” Miriam said. “Take a chance. Start a business. Make a new best friend. Step outside your comfort zone knowing you don’t have to do it alone. Most of all, I want women to leave saying, ‘I’m so glad I came!’”
What’s Next?
Miriam’s passion for creating something of her own extends beyond community events.
Her connection to wine goes back to childhood, when she would accompany her mother to work at local wineries. Years later, those memories helped inspire another project: M.A. ROSÉ, a delicate Cabernet rosé named after her sons, Mateo and Andrés.
The wine was a collaboration with her husband at Pastori Winery, and the two worked side by side throughout the process. It was truly hands-on—from harvesting and sorting the grapes to crushing them, making the wine and even applying the labels by hand.
In the end, they produced just 25 cases. It may not be enough for a commercial release, but it could be the beginning of something bigger.
For now, Miriam continues doing what started this journey in the first place: bringing people together. The next “Evento con Amigas” will take place on October 10 with a walk along the coast, and it will be 100% free.
