The event focused on explaining the government’s efforts to control who stars in US history in order to fit it into their narrative.

Attack on national memory

Ann Burroughs, president of the Japanese American Confinement Sites Consortium, begins by reminding us that control over how history is told impacts the sense of belonging for future generations. With that in mind, the Trump administration has deployed efforts to “homogenize culture and eliminate diversity, framing the past through a single ideological lens,” Burroughs notes.

The president warns that this is why the government has instrumentalized museum funding: “at the end of the day, it is a conflict about power.” Burroughs asserts that museums operate within the First Amendment and that their ultimate goal is to “keep the stories that are uncomfortable, those uncomfortable truths.” That is why she states they cannot remain neutral in the face of the current political situation, which has escalated to the murders of Alex Prety and Renee Good. “Because it is about preserving memory, it is about who defines the past.”

The reasons behind Trump’s attempt to rewrite history

Ray Suarez, host of the new PBS series Wisdom Keepers and author of books on the modern era of American immigration, points out that “the national government is using its foundational power” to decide who defines history and who is excluded from it.

Suarez explains that the construction of this false narrative, which uses white guilt as an excuse, aims to centralize history and make it appear as if it were built by only one type of people. Ultimately, this translates into terms used in the media such as “legacy Americans,” a concept Suarez categorizes as abstract.

For her part, Margaret Huang, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center, reminds us that building these narratives that erase non-white people from American history is nothing new. She points to the more than two thousand memorials across the country dedicated to Confederate generals, many of which were not built during or immediately after the Civil War, but were placed up to 80 years later. This happened in an era when the narrative of white supremacy was at the forefront, fighting against the civil rights movement.

Despite this outlook, Huang reminds us that this type of historical rewriting can be combated by the community. She recalls the case of the “Mothers of Gynecology,” led by African American activist Michelle Browder, who achieved the construction of a memorial dedicated to three enslaved women who were surgically operated on against their will by J. Marion Sims. These three women, Betsy, Anarka, and Lucy, were erased from history despite their contribution to science, while Marion Sims still had memorials in his name. Thanks to Browder, the mothers of gynecology managed to obtain recognition for their sacrifice.

Finally, Anneshia Hardy, cultural narrative strategist, scholar-practitioner, and social impact entrepreneur, reminds us that the real question behind Trump’s directive responds to imposing certain voices that are allowed to mold history and defining who is treated as inconvenient.

Hardy warns that school curricula are being sanitized in the name of neutrality and camouflaged as “common sense.” “When communities are pushed out of the Nation’s official memory, it becomes easier to cast them aside and remove them from the political imaginary,” says Hardy. This directly translates into affecting protection policies for communities like the Latino community, forgetting their contribution to the United States.

With the Trump administration in charge of hosting the 250th anniversary of US history amidst massive ICE raids, recently intensified in areas like Minneapolis, and attempts to control what is said not only in museums but in school curricula, American Community Media organized a briefing.
