Families find hope in the education system, not only for social and economic advancement, but also as a way to educate their children beyond the strictly academic.

At a briefing organized by American Community Media, Harvard scholar Gabrielle Oliveira, author of Now We Are Here: Family Migration, Children’s Education and Dreams for a Better Life, explains the close relationship between love and education in family migration and how Trump’s anti-immigration policies affect this link.

Oliveira explains that migrant families are often portrayed as one-dimensional, whose sole motivation is to improve their economic situation. However, she emphasizes that the education of their children is particularly important to them, as it acts as a “stabilizing force,” where the possibility of their children going to school gives meaning to the sacrifices they make as migrants.

Migrant families see education as part of the promise of the “American Dream,” in which if you work hard enough in the education system, you can have more opportunities. But in addition to the promise of social advancement, migrant families understand that forming good human beings is part of education.

However, Oliveira warns about anti-immigration policies that are designed to harm migrant families and discourage them. The academic acknowledges that we are in a state of high vigilance, as migrant families are concerned about accompanying their children to school, removing them from the education system. This could damage the social fabric, causing young and productive people to feel uprooted from the United States, generating trauma and long-term exclusion.

As part of the recommendations to avoid this situation, Oliveira recommends the integration of migrant children, creating spaces where they can share their culture in depth. However, budget cuts for schools have led to a shortage of staff dedicated to creating these spaces and accompanying migrant families in the process.

While the media and academic studies have described the economic reasons behind family migration, the education of children is often overlooked.
