The California university will not reinstate its athletic programs or fully reopen the eliminated degree programs, despite a major state budget infusion to address its financial crisis.<\/strong>

Sonoma State University (SSU) has confirmed it will not bring back its athletic programs for the 2025\u20132026 academic year, despite receiving a one-time $45 million allocation from the state budget. The university had announced in January the elimination of all NCAA sports and nearly two dozen academic programs as part of efforts to address a $24 million deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly allocated funds will be directed toward key areas: $16 million to expand the nursing program, $5 million for a data science center, $5 million for career services, $9 million to restore some previously cut programs, and $8 million for athletics over the next three years. However, university officials clarified that the funding will not be enough to reinstate NCAA sports in the near term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golf coach Val Verhunce, who has worked at SSU for 22 years, said his team now has no players, but he remains determined to fight for the return of the program. \u201cWe\u2019re going to rebuild Sonoma State\u2019s brand and show people what we\u2019re capable of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SSU has seen a nearly 40% decline in enrollment over the past decade. Combined with rising operational costs, this has worsened the school\u2019s financial outlook. Some students, like Matthew Cruz, remain optimistic. \u201cI\u2019ve got two years left. With this new funding, I\u2019m hopeful I can finish,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university has announced the formation of a working group to develop a long-term plan for the future of athletics, with recommendations expected by January 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
